How to keep the compost/yard waste cart free of odors and insects

Pests and odors can be kept to a minimum with regular emptying and cleaning of your green bin. Remember you are not making more organic waste than before, but only moving it into a different can.

Place newspaper on the bottom of your compost/yard waste cart, which absorbs liquids, prevents odors and makes it easier to clean.

Freeze your food scraps and place into can the night before pickup in a brown paper bag.

Cover any loose food scraps going into the bin with newspaper

Make sure the lid remains closed to prevent rodents and animals from climbing into the can.
 

Lemon juice, white vinegar, baking soda and water are natural cleaners


Diatomaceous Earth that may help with odor and insects. It is a natural deodorizer and insect repellent that is safe to add to the can.
